The tree and soil
Exist in mutual dependency.
Not declaring, "I need this,"
Or "I want that,"
Nor ever answering,
"This much I'll give."
Without a thought
Of giving life to any other thing,
They simply are
What they were meant to be.

Only death can break the bond.
For necessary bonds -
And those desirable,
Like love -
Cannot be killed by needs or wants
Or even by what's done;
But only by those things withheld
Or truths left unrevealed.
